Part three of our “Best Day Trips from Sacramento” takes us to the historic town of Nevada City. Founded in 1849, Nevada City is a thriving tourist destination with genuine old-fashioned charm. It’s also one of California’s most unique Gold Rush towns. The entire downtown district is a national historic landmark! Nevada City is just bursting with culture and charm. It is a perfect day trip from Sacramento when the kids are out of school, family comes to visit, or for retirees.

Travel down the narrow streets and past century-old buildings as you explore the town’s restaurants, boutiques, antique shops, galleries, and museums. The town is colorful with green hillsides, red storefronts, and white church steeples. A favorite with retirees is the near year-round live theater. The Nevada Theatre was built in 1865 and is the oldest existing theater building on the west coast. Visitors from all over Northern California and the Bay Area travel to see live performances and movies in this 200-seat theater.

Nevada City borders the Tahoe National Forest. It’s just minutes from many Sierra lakes and rivers. With a population of only 2,800 people, this quaint town is the perfect day trip from Sacramento. If you’re looking to escape for more than a day, Nevada City has many B&Bs, inns, and hotels to suit your taste and style. If you like the charm of a classic Queen Victorian home, check out the three-story Deer Creek Inn. Situated on the Deer Creek, this inn features a beautiful rose garden and elegant accommodations. You’ll get a little bit of relief from the hot summer heat in Nevada City. It’s about 10 degrees cooler than Sacramento. Summer is also a great time to visit Nevada City because the town is bustling with activity. From the First Friday Artwalk to the weekly Farmer’s Market, there’s always something to do. Another summer favorite is the “Movies under the Pines”. This outdoor cinema experience runs through August and features cinema classics. Retirees can visit other noteworthy points of interest including the Miners Foundry Cultural Center, Historic Firehouse No.1 Museum, and the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum.
